With faith in the Risen Lord, the Diocese of Sacramento announces the death of Father Brendan McKeefry, who entered eternal life on June 22, 2026, following 59 years of faithful priestly ministry.
Father McKeefry was born on March 17, 1944, in County Derry, Northern Ireland, to Michael McKeefry and Mary Catherine McKenna, the sixth of their seven children. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he often credited the strong faith of his parents and the rhythms of family prayer with nurturing his vocation to the priesthood.
Ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Leeds, England, on June 18, 1967, Father McKeefry served in parish ministry and religious education before transferring to the Diocese of Sacramento in 1979.
Over the next four decades, Father McKeefry faithfully served the People of God in parishes across the Diocese of Sacramento, including Holy Spirit Parish in Fairfield, All Hallows Parish in Sacramento, St. John the Baptist Parish in Chico, St. Thomas More Parish in Paradise, Good Shepherd Parish in Elk Grove and Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Carmichael.
Father McKeefry retired as pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in 2012 after 45 years of priestly ministry. In retirement, he remained active in priestly service, generously assisting in parishes throughout the Diocese whenever needed.
Father McKeefry was preceded in death by his parents, Michael McKeefry and Mary Catherine McKenna, brothers Patrick Joseph (PJ), Michael, and sister, Gertrude Ward. He is survived by brothers Peter and John, and his sister, Mary Kneeland, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends who mourn his passing.
Please pray for the eternal repose of Father McKeefry's soul, for the consolation of his siblings, brother priests, extended family, friends and all who mourn his passing. In thanksgiving for his many years of faithful priestly ministry, may Christ, the Eternal High Priest whom he served so faithfully, welcome His good and faithful servant into the joy of His heavenly kingdom.
