Three times in the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that the Father sees us. He even sees what is secret or hidden. As we begin this Lenten Season let us focus our attention on what our heavenly Father sees no matter how secret or insignificant it may seem to us or to others.
Jesus spoke of prayer, fasting – what we deny ourselves -- and almsgiving – what we give or offer to the poor. He refers to these as “righteous deeds”. They were considered righteous because they are what God sees. They are part of God’s work in us. They are righteous not because we perform them but because God empowers us to do them. They are not just human endeavors; they are part of God’s work. By these works – prayer, sacrifice, and service – our heavenly Father saves us and he saves the world.
Prayer, sacrifice, and service were at the heart of the ministry of Jesus. Our heavenly Father saved us through the prayer, sacrifice, and generous service of his only begotten Son. Jesus invites us to walk with him in the same saving mission. In this way, our heavenly Father will see the heart of his Son Jesus at work in us. He will see us and bless us with the mercy, wisdom, and joy of his Son, Jesus.
As we begin this holy season of Lent, do not be distracted by all that embitters and hardens our hearts. Let us turn our eyes to what God hopes to see in us. Be busy with all the good the Lord Jesus enables us to do. This is what most matters now. May we be the instruments of God’s saving work of mercy and healing. In this way, others will find in us the hope that soothes and saves the world.
Tres veces en el evangelio, Jesús nos recuerda que el Padre nos ve, nos mira. Incluso ve lo que es secreto u oculto. Al comenzar esta temporada de Cuaresma, enfoquemos nuestra atención en lo que nuestro Padre celestial ve, no importa cuán secreto o insignificante pueda parecernos a nosotros o a los demás.
Jesús habló de la oración, del ayuno -lo que nos negamos a nosotros mismos- y de la limosna -lo que damos u ofrecemos a los pobres-. Él se refiere a ellas como "obras justas". Eran considerados justos porque son en lo que Dios se fija. Son parte de la obra de Dios en nosotros. Son justos no porque las realicemos, sino porque Dios nos da el poder para hacerlas. No son solo esfuerzos humanos; son parte de la obra de Dios. Por medio de estas obras —oración, sacrificio y servicio— nuestro Padre celestial nos salva y salva al mundo.
La oración, el sacrificio y el servicio estaban en el corazón del ministerio de Jesús. Nuestro Padre celestial nos salvó a través de la oración, el sacrificio y el servicio generoso de su Hijo unigénito. Jesús nos invita a caminar con él en la misma misión salvífica. De esta manera, nuestro Padre celestial verá el corazón de su Hijo Jesús obrando en nosotros. Él nos verá y nos bendecirá con la misericordia, la sabiduría y el gozo de su Hijo, Jesús.
Al comenzar esta temporada santa de Cuaresma, no se distraigan por todo lo que amarga y endurece nuestros corazones. Volvamos nuestros ojos a lo que Dios espera ver en nosotros. Ocúpate de todo el bien que el Señor Jesús nos permite hacer. Esto es lo que más importa ahora. Que seamos los instrumentos de la obra salvadora de Dios de misericordia y sanación. De esta manera, los demás encontrarán en nosotros la esperanza que alivia y salva al mundo.
