Department of Evangelization and Catechesis welcomes
two new staff members
Arnell Ignacio and Rosina Hendrickson have recently joined the staff of the diocese’s Department of Evangelization and Catechesis. Ignacio serves as Coordinator for Evangelization, New Media and Marketing, and Hendrickson serves as Coordinator for Parish Ministry Support.
Ignacio, who joined the staff in January, brings 10 years of marketing communications experience to his new position, having worked in both nonprofit and industrial telecommunications organizations. He has also been involved at parishes in both the Sacramento and Minneapolis, Minn., metropolitan areas, specifically in music and youth and young adult ministries. “My goal is to use the best practices I have accumulated in my past experiences and provide website, social media and new evangelization support for parishes in the diocese,” he says.
Hendrickson is a native of Des Moines, Iowa, and holds a bachelor’s degree in religious from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and a master’s degree in Catholic studies from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. She previously served as a catechetical leader at parishes in McKinney, Texas; Dothan, Ala., and Fairhope, Ala. Her work has included whole community catechesis, classroom-based faith formation, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and catechist and adult faith formation.

Mass of thanksgiving for Bishop Emeritus William K. Weigand is Monday, May 27
at Cathedral in Sacramento
Bishop Jaime Soto invites the public to join him in a concelebrated Mass of thanksgiving for Bishop Emeritus William K. Weigand on Monday, May 27 at 3 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 11th and K Streets in Sacramento.
The Mass will celebrate Bishop Weigand’s golden jubilee of priestly ordination, honoring his life, ministry and leadership, and thanking him for 50 years of devoted service to the people of God in the Diocese of Boise, Idaho, the Archdiocese of Cali, Colombia, the Diocese of Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Diocese of Sacramento.

on Memorial Day at three
Catholic cemeteries in diocese to honor the departed
The public is invited to join Bishop Jaime Soto on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, as he presides at a Mass of remembrance for the dearly departed. He will preside at Mass at 10 a.m. at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, located at 7101 Verner Ave. in Sacramento. The Knights of Columbus will provide a color guard, the choir and refreshments. Local Boy Scouts will place flags on the graves of U.S. veterans buried at Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum.
Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services of the Diocese of Sacramento will also offer Masses on that day at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Cemetery, located at 6700 21st Ave. in Sacramento, and at 10 a.m. at All Souls Cemetery, located at 550 Glen Cove Road in Vallejo.
Msgr. Edward Kavanagh, pastor emeritus of St. Rose Parish in Sacramento, will celebrate the Mass at St. Mary’s, where the Veterans of Foreign Wars will place flags on the graves of veterans from Sacramento County. Father Jess Soriano, pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Vallejo, will celebrate the Mass at All Souls Cemetery, where the staff of the cemetery will place flags on the graves of U.S. veterans buried there.

Jesuit Father Michael C. Barber appointed as bishop
of the Diocese of Oakland
Vatican City (CNA/EWTN News) - Pope Francis has appointed Jesuit Father Michael C. Barber as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Oakland. He will be ordained a bishop on May 25 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco.
Bishop-elect Barber is currently the Director of Spiritual Formation at Saint John’s Seminary in Brighton, Mass., serving in that capacity since 2010. Before that, he served in the same role at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, where he taught many of the newer priests in the Diocese of Sacramento.
The announcement of his appointment was made on May 3 by the Holy See’s press office. He will succeed Archbishop Cordileone, who was seated as archbishop of San Francisco on Oct. 4. The bishop-elect, who is 58, met the media and the chancery staff on May 3 in Oakland. "I'd like to express my gratitude to the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for his trust and confidence in appointing me bishop of Oakland," he said. "I am humbled that I am the first Jesuit priest to be appointed a bishop by our new Jesuit pope."
The bishop-elect entered the Jesuits in 1973 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1985.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history at Gonzaga University in 1978, completed his theological studies at Regis College at the University of Toronto in 1985, and obtained an ecclesiastical license in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1989.
Bishop-elect Barber is a graduate of St. John Vianney School in Rancho Cordova and grew up in the parish. He also graduated from St. Pius X Preparatory School in Galt (now closed) in 1972. He speaks English, Italian, Spanish and Latin.

California bishops endorse reform of immigration system currently before U.S. Senate
The Catholic bishops of California issued a statement May 1 in recognition of the historic introduction of immigration reform legislation in the U.S. Senate and to recognize rallies across the state in support of immigration reform.
The bishops, in solidarity with the U.S. bishops, said they applaud the introduction of bipartisan legislation to reform the "broken U.S. immigration system."
"Throughout our dioceses, as pastors called by the Good Shepherd to care for those in need, we are sharing our own immigration stories and teaching the principles found in our Catholic social teaching," they said.
"For many years, we have advocated for comprehensive reform of the nation's immigration laws. Our country has a right and a responsibility to protect its borders and effective immigration laws are part of that enforcement. Right now, however, the current system fails both the nation and those seeking to contribute to American society."

AB 154 Pending before the Assembly
California bishops oppose
bill in state legislature that would allow non-physicians
to perform abortions
Opponents of allowing non-physicians to perform first trimester abortions filled the hearing room to overflowing on April 23 as the 19 members of the Assembly Health Committee heard Assembly Bill 154. Assemblywoman Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) presented her arguments with the help of the research scientist who had headed a five-year UC San Francisco pilot program in which nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and physician assistants were trained and performed abortions.
Two physicians, Dr. Monica Ruiz-Durant and Dr. Vansen Wong, each gave testimony refuting the author's claim of lack of access and pointing out that AB 154 would allow a lower standard of care for women. Following their presentations, the Assembly Health Committee chair asked if there was other opposition. Nearly 100 people rose from their seats and lined up to give a brief plea to the Legislators to vote no on AB 154 -- -including a number of young women with their small children in tow.
The bill passed out of the committee on a party-line vote: 13-6. The bill is still pending in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Camp Pendola now
accepting registrations for
the 2013 summer season
Camp Pendola, the official summer camp of the Diocese of Sacramento, is now accepting registrations for the 2013 summer season. This year, the traditional summer camp program will be celebrating 53 years of serving children and youth ages six to 17.
Camp Pendola exists to build lasting relationships and teaching stewardship of God’s creation through Christian community living in the outdoors. Programs include traditional camping for boys and girls in grades 2-12, a teen adventure canoe trip for boys and girls, a seedlings mini-camp for girls ages six and seven, and Campers in Leadership training for boys and girls in grades nine and 10. Members of the Young Ladies Institutes present donation to Bishop Soto for the education of diocesan seminarians

Members from the 12 Young Ladies Institutes of District Six, Seven and 21 of the Diocese of Sacramento gathered at St. Katharine Drexel Church in Martell for Mass and a luncheon. During the luncheon, Westerfeld, who serves as district deputy from District Seven, presented Bishop Soto with a check for $13,447.
Since the beginning of the Golden Jubilee Burse 76 years ago, more than $3 million has been contributed to member bishops, Westerfeld notes, and the Young Ladies Institutes have contributed more than $364,000 to the bishops of Sacramento for seminarian education.
Approximately 8,500 Catholic women belong to the Young Ladies Institute in dioceses in California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.

Letter to the faithful of Diocese
Bishop Soto recommends many ways Catholics can benefit from the Year of Faith
In a letter released to the faithful of the Diocese of Sacramento, Bishop Jaime Soto has joined with Pope Benedict XVI and all of his brother bishops to enter into the Year of Faith, declared by His Holiness, with a desire to “repent and believe in the Gospel!” (Mark 1:15).
“So that we may renew the world through the power of the Holy Spirit, it is essential that we renew ourselves,” the bishop said in the letter, which will be distributed through parish bulletins Dec. 1-2. “The work of the Spirit in the Church always calls us to be renewed as well as to renew the face of the earth. Through our own conversion of heart, we can then convert our time, talent and treasure for the work of the Kingdom of God.”
In March 2012, Bishop Soto proposed a pastoral vision to the people of the diocese, which outlined strategic steps necessary to cooperate with God’s grace in achieving this vision:
—Revitalize Catholic education
—Invigorate the formation of the laity
—Encourage our youth and young adults, challenging them to serve Christ and his church
—Announce the Gospel in the public square of social media
—Serve the poor and marginalized more effectively
—Harness the resources so all this can be done.

The bishop recommends four ways Catholics can all benefit from this year of grace:
—Make greater use of the sacrament of penance.
—Learn more about the Catholic faith, utilizing resources in parishes as well as through the Diocesan Pastoral Center. The diocese has published for distribution in parishes a simple prayer card with two well-known prayers, the Apostles’ Creed and Invocation of the Holy Spirit. “I ask you to incorporate these prayers as a daily habit and take them to memory,” the bishop said.
—Make a pilgrimage during the Year of Faith. Local churches and monasteries in the diocese have been designated for this purpose.
—Strive to be what we receive, to be the sacrament of charity in Northern California.

The Church celebrates
a Year of Faith, from Oct. 11, 2012 to Nov. 24, 2013
With his Apostolic Letter of Oct. 11, 2011, “Porta Fidei,” Pope Benedict XVI declared that a “Year of Faith” began on Oct. 11, 2012 and concludes on Nov. 24, 2013.
Oct. 11, the first day of the Year of Faith, was the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and also the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith.

"…They called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith…” (Acts 14:27). In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that God has opened the door of faith for the early church. The Year of Faith is an opportunity for every Catholic to turn toward Jesus Christ, encounter him in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and rediscover the faith and church.
The Year of Faith is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world" (“Porta Fidei,” no. 6). In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The “door of faith” ‘is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called upon to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his church.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has provided pages on its website with videos and links to a variety of resources to help Catholics renew their baptismal call by living out the everyday moments of their lives with faith, hope and love. As the Catholic Church celebrates the Year of Faith, the U.S. bishops' Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth is providing resources for families, including tips for keeping Sundays holy and centered on family, prayers and devotionals for the family, and ideas for building the presence of the Church in the home.
The resources are available online at www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/new-evangelization/year-of-faith/year-of-faith-family-resources.cfm and include prayers for special occasions, guides for celebrating the Sacraments as a family, suggestions for praying as a married couple and reflections by Blessed Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Sean O'Malley, OFM Cap., of Boston. Sunday Mass is broadcast live on five Immaculate Heart Radio stations in diocese
Sunday Mass recorded live from various parishes throughout the Diocese of Sacramento is broadcast on five Immaculate Heart Radio stations each Sunday from 11 a.m. to noon.
The Sunday Mass is recorded for two consecutive Sundays in one parish, then rotates to another parish, so that listeners may experience various pastors celebrating the Mass and delivering their homilies.

'Catechesis 101' now offered to give catechists a solid foundation for their ministry
The diocese’s Department of Evangelization and Catechesis has developed “Catechesis 101,” an innovative eight-lesson online course designed to give catechists a solid foundation for their ministry. The course is now available.
The course was designed for anyone engaged in the work of catechesis: K-8 faith formation, youth ministry, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, marriage preparation, sacramental preparation and any other form of catechesis. All eight lessons contain beautiful, high quality video with music and instruction to enrich the learning experience.
In the Diocese of Sacramento, all catechists are required to be working toward obtaining or renewing their California catechist certificate. This course fulfills the content requirement of “The Nature of Catechesis and Catechetical Methodology.”

Report on causes and context of clergy sexual abuse of minors addresses several misperceptions about abuse, reports no single cause or predictor
According to a long-awaited report on the causes and context of sexual abuse by priests in the United States released May 2011, because potential sexual abusers of minors cannot be pinpointed through “identifiable psychological characteristics,” it is “very important” to prevent abuse by limiting the “situational factors” associated with it. The report said there is “no single identifiable ‘cause’ of sexually abusive behavior toward minors.” It encouraged steps to deny abusers “the opportunity to abuse.” The report is titled “The Causes and Context of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests in the United States, 1950-2010.” It reports the findings of a study mandated in 2002 under the U.S. Catholic bishops’ “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.”
