Lay Formation Institute

To speak with a real live person about the Lay Formation Institute, you may call (916) 733-0123.

The Lay Formation Institute has been designed and established as a program which provides opportunities for adults throughout the Diocese to become more knowledgeable of the Catholic faith, to grow spiritually, and to receive training for specific ecclesial ministries within the Catholic community.  The Institute is open to catechists, teachers, parents, and all lay men and women of the Diocese of Sacramento interested in learning more about the Catholic faith.  Courses may be taken individually or as an entire Institute.

The First Year of the Lay Formation Institute covers all essential doctrinal areas put forth by the United States Bishops Conference as necessary for catechists to teach in parishes and school.  Those completing the first year of the Institute will be given Basic Catechist Certification.

The Second Year of the Lay Formation Institute covers areas of great relevance for understanding and living our faith in the world.  Current topics include Church History and Catholic Theological Tradition, Ethical Challenges in Contemporary Culture, Catholic Social Teaching, Spirituality and Spiritual Growth, Sacramental theology, Biblical exegesis, Catechetics and Prayer.  Those taking these more advanced courses can apply them toward the Renewal of the Basic Certification or toward their certification as a Master Catechists.

If you would like to participate in one or more Lay Formation Institute sessions and are not seeking catechist certification, you too are welcome to pre-register and attend to grow in your knowledge of the Catholic Faith.
